Starting strong with a picture of myself
On Saturday, May 7th, I decided to add another country to my list and visit Maastricht, the Netherlands for the day. It still blows my mind that I can go on a day trip to another country - Europe is the best. Maastricht is another city outside of Belgium that Belgian Rail takes you to for a super good price (€12,50 roundtrip), so I figured there was no excuse not to go! It was a beautifully warm and sunny day - and we missed 2 trains. The one leaving from Leuven and then our transfer leaving from Liège. So, we were going to be set back a good two hours, but our hour to kill in Liège (you can read about my previous, on purpose, trip to Liège here) actually turned out to be one of my most memorable days so far - and for the strangest reason.
Park in Liège
These big guys here look like some underwhelming petting zoo - but watch the videos below. Trust me.
Life goal: have squad of geese follow me around
One of the best days of my life
I still have no idea what was going on in Liège that day, but I'm so glad we missed our train. Exhibit B below.
I can't even guess what this is supposed to mean
After a very odd hour in Liège we were en route to Maastricht. Enjoy a look at the city!
Boekhandel Dominicanen: a bookstore in a church
Basilica of Saint Servatius
Just your classic European side street filled with food and people
Helpoort: the old city gate
So much green <3
Bluebells peeking up to say "hey"
Aaaaand the random finds continue. Maastricht apparently has the weirdest mishmash of animals all fenced-in together. I'm talkin' deer, chickens, goats, and a peacock hanging out in the park.
Doesn't even look real - so beautiful
This makes up for my failure to get a good picture of the peacock at Tivoli in Copenhagen
To top off the day we had dinner at this really cool place called Fresh. I opted for the Mexican dog with actual nachos and cheese as a topping; my travel bud went with the Sauerkraut dog complete with bacon and crispy onions. I would go back to Maastricht just for this.
You can take the girls outta Belgium, but you can't take the Belgium outta the girls: fries on the side, please
Headed home
The sun was setting and we were stuffed with hot dogs and fries - perfect day. Sometimes missing the train can end up working in your favour and you get to experience two amazing trips in one day. Good little life metaphor to remind you to go with the flow and let yourself be surprised (and to enjoy the surprise). Yuck so corny. Thanks for reading!
